Natural Light

Natural light can be great for portraits - if you know how to control it. I will teach you how to create stunning portraits using light from a window or doorway.

You can also learn how to isolate and back-light your subject to diminish unwanted backgrounds and create stunning high-key (bright/white background) portraits. Similarly, learn how to use light fall-off to eliminate unwanted background items and create cool low-key (dark/black background) portraits.

Flash

On-camera flash photographs can look dreadful!

Whether for events or portraits, I can teach you simple techniques to make your flash photos look natural and stunning! No awful, unflattering, shiny specularity on subjects faces; and no unwanted shadows cast behind them - just beautifully lit people.

Introduction to Studio

Studio lighting can be simple or complex. How much equipment you need depends on the look you want, the remit and your knowledge of what can be done with equipment.

I can set up all your studio lights and explain their purpose, but mostly I keep things simple because my studio is mobile. Over the years, I've learnt how to do more with less Smile

My portable studio comprises of a large, parabolic umbrella softbox, light stands, reflector, large collapsable background, a speedlight and a continuous LED panel. This setup can be used to demonstrate lighting patterns and techniques such as short, broad and beauty lighting. You can also learn how to position lighting and the subject for high-key and low-key portraits.

Flattering The Subject

Learn to flatter your subjects and make them look at their absolute best:

  • Which focal lengths are best for portraiture
  • Where to place subjects in the frame with group shots to show them at their best
  • How and when to use short and broad lighting to better suit the subject's face
  • Where and where not to crop a subject's body
  • Male and female pattern lighting
  • How to pose male and female subjects to flatter their proportions
  • How to pose couples and groups to show each subject at their best
