PhotoLab is a thoroughly modern RAW development application.
Like Lightroom, PhotoLab works with RAW data via a preview, before the pixels have actually been created, which means it's totally non-destructive and the RAW data remains unchanged. To me, this approach is far more modern and efficient than editing pixels with graphics software (Photoshop and similar).
Unlike Lightroom, it doesn't use a catalogue, so you don't need to go through an import process. Instead, PhotoLab gives you direct access to your files using its own file browser. And the adjustments you make are recorded in a sidecar file stored with your image file.
PhotoLab performs lens, sensor and other intelligently derived adjustments automatically. There are also preset "looks" with previews including black and white, HDR and more. This makes it easy for beginners to get great results quickly and easily without having to learn the full potential of all the tools straight away.
Moving on, there are lots of slider-based tools organised under what DxO calls "Pallets". These Pallets, as with the whole interface, are fully customisable, and with the excellent local adjustment tools, PhotoLab is both powerful and easy to use.
Lightroom Plugin: For Lightroom users, PhotoLab also works as a Lightroom plugin. So you can still use the photo management of old versions of Lightroom you may have bought and benefit from the superior development of PhotoLab if you wish.
No Subscription! Unlike Lightroom, PhotoLab is available to buy, own and optionally upgrade as and when new versions are developed by DxO.
There are two options: Essentials and Elite priced at £99 and £159 respectively. Periodically, there are discounts offered from these prices and on the specialist plugin modules available.
For most clients, I would recommend Elite. But after the 30-day trial (trial version is Elite), if you feel you don't require all the features of Elite, you could go with Essentials.
On Your Computer: Ideally, you would download and install the trial version of DxO PhotoLab on your computer before the appointment. If you're not sure how to do this, we can do it during the appointment.
Or On My Laptop: Alternatively, we can use my laptop which has PhotoLab (and Lightroom 6) installed.
With my one-to-one tuition, you'll quickly master this great RAW development software.
We start by using PhotoLab's file browser to locate images on your camera and transfer them to a suitable folder on your hard drive. Next, we observe the automatic corrections and adjustments made to your image files by PhotoLab, before transferring a selected image to the "Customise" module to learn how to use presets and adjustment tools.
Once you're happily familiar with the development options and tools, we take a look at exporting purpose-dedicated JPEG files for the web and printing, as well as PhotoLab's own print module for making prints directly from the RAW preview.
We can also cover workflow and the various ways to rate, sort and filter images.
Optimise your RAW files: You will have more scope to develop images with less noise if you optimise exposure when taking the shot. Together with setting your camera up with its best options for RAW, I can show you how this is done.
Photo critique: As well as teaching you how to develop beautiful images with PhotoLab, I can give some constructive critique of your photos if you wish too
